Welcome to Ninja Week! This week we’ll be talking about Magic’s newest and sneakiest creature type. (By the way, do you realize that with the introduction of ninjas in Betrayers of Kamigawa that Mistform Ultimus is now a Mystic Rabbit Ninja?) But I’ve already talked about how ninjas were designed (“When Ninjas Attack”) several weeks ago. What do I have left to talk about?
Then I remembered that I actually have two different responsibilities for Magic. One is running design. The other is overseeing the Creative Team (Brady Dommermuth, Jeremy Cranford, Brandon Bozzi, Matt Cavotta & Doug Alexander Gregory). So today I thought it might be fun to swap hats and turn this into a Magic Creative column. And in doing so I can answer a very thorny question – Do ninjas belong in Magic?

忍者週間ということで、タイトルにもある「忍者はマジックなのか？」という疑問を取り上げています。
マジック・ザ・ギャザリングは名前の通り、魔法の世界が基本ですが、そこに忍者がいるのはいいのか？という疑問です。ここを疑問に思うかは、時代も関係するように思います。創作物における忍者の扱いも色々ありましたので、今だとそこまで不思議に思われないかもしれません。当時としては、あまり相応しくないように考えられていたようですが。
最終的には、「新しいものを受け入れることも必要だ」「忍者も魔法を隠れ身や暗殺に使っている設定にした」などの妥協の末に、受け入れられました。
現代に至っては、忍者は人気が高く、むしろ登場をもっと望まれているようなので、こうした議論があったころから変わったものだと思います。
